Canadair CL-215 “Hephaestus”: a 50th-anniversary airplane painting scheme.

The painting of “Hephaestus” appeared, for the first time, on the tail unit of the aircraft with s/n 1060, during a static exhibition display, on the 11th of November 2018 in Greece.

Hephaestus was one of the twelve great Olympian gods and was the Greek god of fire and metalworking. He was the child of Zeus and Hera, but most probably was born out of parthenogenesis from Hera alone, after the latter had quarrelled with Zeus at that time. Hephaestus, as a divine craftsman was making jewellery of magical beauty for his benefactors but also weapons for the Greeks during the Trojan war. Homer illustrates three different aspects of Hephaestus in the Iliad. In one of them, in book 18, Hephaestus appears as a blacksmith, having a huge, hairy torso, long and thin legs, working, sweating and puffing over his anvil, to make the marvellous armour, requested by Thetis for Achilles.

As god of fire, Hephaestus had not only workshops on Mount Olympus but in many places in the world resounded the noise of his hammering, and smoking from the ceaseless fire activity, especially beneath the volcanic Mount Etna in Sicily.

Hephaestus tamed the fiery energy and used fire for the benefit of humankind and he is considered the patron of blacksmiths, goldsmiths, silversmiths, etc. In a broader sense, it was thought that Hephaestus quells, controls fire and acts as a civil protection patronage god.
